Sleepwalking is so yesterday. Today's way to go is sleep-texting, or unconsciously sending text messages in the middle of the night. According to the Columbia News Service, an increasing number of teens and young adults pretend to have been texting while asleep, like that 24 year-old girl from Texas who sent two text messages to her boyfriend after talking to him before going to sleep. The first words were comprehensible but the rest of the message was gibberish.
But contrary to sleepwalking, sleep-texting is much more complex. As noted by CNS, sending a text message involves more than 10 steps, including selecting “text message” in the menu and using the complex predictive text input method, which obviously requires a lot of attention. However, some experts believe that, for the young generation, texting has become so intuitive that even going through these steps can be done in a semi-conscious state. But there might be another, less mystical explanation: Some experts believe that individuals who claim to have been sleep-texting may just have been awake but have amnesia for the event.
