A 5.2-incher that is unlikely to get your pulse racing, the 2017 Alcatel Pulsemix offers a bevy of budget-class specs, although we did spot a some noteworthy pros alongside its low-end cons.

First off, its 8-megapixel f/2.0-aperture primary camera comes with a dual-tone LED flash that obviously makes it sound more-appealing versus a lot of other cams with similar pixel resolutions. Its front-facing secondary camera, despite suffering from a ghastly 2-megapixel resolution , comes with its own frontal LED light as well , which at least gives it a bit of flair in the selfie department.

Despite being on the low-key side when it comes to hardware (We'll get to that later on), the Pulsemix shows some signs of life through its software perks, which include NextRadio and OneTouch Music , with Deezer courtesy of Cricket Wireless (its initial carrier) thrown in as well. VoLTE, VoWifi, and 4G LTE support also found their way into its feature set.

Its other pros and cons are led by its optional SNAPBAK covers , which are detachable rear-mounted accessories that amplify particular phone functions. For instance, the Sound SNAPBAK equips the phone with a duo of 2.5W speakers. Obviously, these SNAPBAKs are less-ambitious mutations of Motorola's Moto Mods, but it's pretty nice seeing some high-class technology trickling down towards roughly-80-dollar phones like the Pulsemix.

Up front, the Pulsemix rocks a 5.2-inch display with a 1280 x 720 (HD) pixel resolution , which we think could have been bumped up to 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), considering its 2D Dragontrail protective glass finish . We do, however, appreciate its metal backing and engraved power key -- little efforts that we don't usually get from models in this Android category.

Moving onto its hardware, the Pulsemix is powered by a reasonable (for its price) MTK 6738 1.5GHz quad-core processor coupled with 2GB's worth of RAM. It feeds off a 2800mAh battery, which, considering its relatively low-key pros and cons, is just what the doctor ordered. As for storage, its 16GB internal memory falls a bit shy of the 32GB capacities offered by some of its mass-tier competitors, but it does support up to 128GB of memory expansion via microSD .

To review, the Alcatel Pulsemix may not possess a high-end engine nor an ultra-crisp display, but perks like its SNAPBAK accessories (sold separately) and dual-tone camera flash should help this Nougat-run Android find its pulse in the entry-level market.
