BLU Advance 4 L3 Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by Christelle Nina

The BLU Advance 4 L3 is an ultra-low-budget phone through and through. Many of its specs are acceptable for the price point, but it does come in with a few surprises -- both pleasant and unpleasant -- here and there.

Starting off with its cameras, both sensors don't make it beyond the 4-megapixel mark. At the back sits a 3.2-megapixel shooter . Obviously, this smartphone's market range is a clear indicator that one won't be able to find competitive cameras attached to it. However, for a device that is released in 2017, this small of a resolution can be considered a con. This is especially true considering how similarly-priced models are able to squeeze in a few more megapixels for their respective main cameras.

Its video-recording capabilities and selfie camera are more forgiving, on the other hand. They aren't superstars by any means, but a maximum recording resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a front-facing 2-megapixel sensor make the Advance 4.0 L3 more up to par with its peers.

Its battery pros and cons present an interesting situation. In terms of raw power, its 1300mAh battery is one of the poorest contenders in the comparison below. In spite of this, it has the best stand-by and talk time among the devices whose longevity data are available. Extending this scenario to a wider perspective, 1300mAh is about 46 percent lower than the average across all the phones in our database (as of March 2017). But the Advance 4 L3's 17-hour talk time is 42 percent higher than the mean (and its 700-hour stand-by time more than double). It's easy to see that this device manages its power usage rather satisfactorily on calls (at least on paper), but keep in mind that its mAh rating is still a likely pitfall once the usage of other apps (like the camera or the browser) is introduced into the equation.

Physically, the main thing we're dissatisfied with this phone is its thickness. A depth of 11.4mm seems like an awful lot of bulk for a 4-inch device, especially since it doesn't have the issue of having to wrestle with a huge battery or powerful hardware. On the other hand, the brushed aluminum housing that it's enclosed with provides good aesthetic value.

This BLU model's pros and cons present an interesting case to budget buyers. Do its talk time and premium-looking finish justify the bulk and lack of raw battery power? The answer, as it is with most things, really boils down to the consumer's individual needs and priorities.
