BLU Studio J8 Pros & Cons Review

BLU's Studio J8 may want to redraw itself inside BLU's smartphone studio, since its 3G-only network capability (21Mbps maximum data rate only) has absolutely no business being in the 2017 Android market. Also, unless you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you would know that LTE-capable (4G) budget smartphones were already widely available long before the J8's release. Luckily for meticulous techies like us, though, it comes with a full-blown LTE model.

Its sluggish data connectivity aside, the Studio J8 comes with a set of pros and cons that is almost typical for any low-budget BLU Android phone. These include an underwhelming HD-720p resolution on its 5.5-inch display , which fortunately comes with the brand's signature Infinite View screen technology and a curved glass finish . It also rocks what BLU calls a One Touch Fingerprint Sensor (sitting right under its rear camera), a facet that we are more used to seeing on the specs lists of higher-caliber models.

For its imaging, the Studio J8 uses an 8-megapixel LED-flash-equipped rear camera with support for Full HD (1080p) video-recording , which we think hits just the right note for a phone in this price range. Moreover, it features a 5-megapixel selfie camera armed with its own front-facing LED light , hoping to attract selfie addicts strolling the budget Android aisles.

For its physique, we found its electrolyzed metal (aluminum) housing to be a double-edged sword, since it also causes the devices to be quite heavy (relative to most other low-caliber models), at 183 grams . Inside its shell sits a 2500mAh battery that is neither impressive nor disappointing when matched to its other pros and cons.

Last, and certainly the least-promising, is the J8's unremarkable hardware set, consisting of a MediaTek MT6580 quad-core 1.3GHz processor and no more than 1GB of RAM . Its 8GB internal memory expandable by a maximum of 64GB sounds mediocre as well. At least its dual micro SIM card support eases the pain a bit.

Topped off by the Android 7.0 Nougat platform, the BLU Studio J8 may not have that many bells and whistles in its arsenal, but things like fingerprint recognition and a selfie flash give it a solid chance versus lots of other low-budget 2017 smartphones.
