BLU Vivo 5 Mini Review of Pros And Cons

- Analysis by Christelle Nina

As the BLU Vivo 5's mini version, one would likely expect the BLU Vivo 5 Mini to be roughly the same phone packed in a smaller body. That isn't the case, however, as the latter looks different enough from its supposed bigger sibling that it could pass for an entirely-unrelated phone altogether. In fact, almost all of its other specs have been downgraded, as well. Nevertheless, one of the few things that the Mini version has retained is the Vivo 5's ability to record 1080p videos . Compared to similar low-tier devices, this gives it a bit of an edge. Its 5-megapixel rear camera and 3.2-megapixel selfie shooter are also comparatively-good.

This device also offers a classy take on the standard budget-smartphone aesthetic. Housed in an aircraft-grade aluminum unibody whose design is reminiscent of the iPhone SE, it blows the typical candy-shell phone out of the water. What further adds to this impressive aesthetic is its display which is made of curved glass (although there isn't anything else remotely-promising about the quality of its 800 x 480 screen ). The Mini is unsurprisingly very light at 119 grams, as well .

Performance-wise, the Vivo 5 Mini racks up a few pros and cons, too. The four-core MediaTek 6580 processor inside it gives off a respectable 1.3GHz clock speed . It performs poorly in the RAM department, however, as it only sports 512MB in this aspect.

Although it packs a 1500mAh-only battery (which is quite low even by basic-smartphone standards), the Vivo 5 Mini is surprisingly able to squeeze out an above-average 24 hours of 2G talk time (on paper, that is). It's capable of staying on stand-by for almost 30 days, too .

In spite of the low raw battery power and unimpressive display, the Vivo 5 Mini still seems to be a highly-usable basic smartphone. For the price that it currently demands (which is just bound to decrease as time passes, anyway), the pros and cons that it offers seem balanced and fair, and it's left to how much the consumer values aesthetics versus display quality -- or running talk time versus raw mAh count -- to determine if this smartphone is worthy of a second look.
