- Analysis by KJ David
A successor to the S8, the Gionee S9 banks heavily on its imaging specs, particularly, two distinct rear-facing cameras (13-megapixel + 5-megapixel) , largely for depth-of-field analysis, and a really whopping 13-megapixel selfie cam with its own front-facing soft light . Weirdly enough, it only captures Full-HD-1080p videos at best , while some other high-enders with tantamount imaging setups record 4K to 2160p videos in comparison.
As for its other pros and cons, the Gionee S9 operates on an eight-core MediaTek MT6755 2GHz processor and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM (a RAM count we have come to expect from any flagship contender), which are accompanied by a passable 3000mAh battery , which predictably makes it only stand its ground among other flagships, scoring similar to the Galaxy S7 on our mAh-to-display size ratio metrics, and beating the iPhone 7 (with its so-low 1960 mAh), but it is, as always, easy to beat on that matter.
Considering its hardware components, however, its 5.5-inch FHD-1080p (instead of Quad HD) screen sounds like a con, though it does sport a 2.5D-curved cover glass and its display fineness of 400 dots per inch (DPI) seems at par.
Also part of its high-end selection of pros and cons is a fingerprint sensor bundled with application locking and a personal private space -- a perk that quit making us excited a while ago, considering how personal spaces of all kind are easy to get by almost anywhere nowadays -- with 64GB of memory extendable by up to 128GB taking care of storage. Lastly, it is encased by a full-aluminum body that further rejoices us by scoring a relatively-low thickness of 7.4mm , which, without breaking world records, at least broke into the below-average line of its launch time, a figure that hovered somewhere around the 9mm mark. And like plenty of other 2016 high-enders, it is offered in colors that turned out to be the phone-fashion trend of the year 2016 actually: gold and rose gold, of course.
In a nutshell, the Gionee S9 is a viable option for phone photography buffs who are also looking for some flair hardware-wise.
