A successor to the Huawei P9 that retains most of its predecessor's high-caliber DNA in terms of pros and cons, the P10 calls out to upscale shoppers looking for a photography-first flagship smartphone. That being said, we were rather disappointed to find only a 3200mAh battery power among it specs, knowing that some of its high-end counterparts from competing brands lugged at least 4000mAh of power as we were reviewing its technical features. Moreover, for a phone that puts many eggs into the imaging basket, it settles for an 8-megapixel-only selfie cam , which obviously shies of the selfie shooters touted by the best smartphones for selfies out there.
On the opposite corner, the Huawei P10's rear-facing dual camera (co-engineered with Leica) is at the helm of its pros. This dual-lens camera system comes with SUMMARIT-H lenses and delivers 4K (3840 x 2160) video-recording alongside optical image stabilization (OIS) . It also boasts a 4-in-one focusing system -- an amalgam of phase-detection (PDAF), contrast autofocus, laser autofocus, and depth autofocus. Photography perks like Huawei's 2x Hybrid Zoom technology and a dual-tone flash contribute to its strong chances of joining our list of the best photography phones as well.
Powering its pros and cons from under the hood is the P10's flagship-class Kirin 960 dual-cluster eight-core processor running at 2.4GHz + 1.8GHz (likely putting it alongside the fastest smartphones available), with a hearty-enough 4GB RAM alongside it.
Regrettably, the P10 dials it down when it comes to display, sporting a 5.1-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) 432ppi screen , which is a slight con, by flagship Android standards, since a good number of full-blown premium Androids boast QHD (2560 x 1440) displays and score VR-caliber pixel densities of over 500ppi. Some of us are willing to overlook that setback, however, since its body measures a relatively-sexy 6.98mm thin and its rear end comes with either a diamond-cut, a high-gloss, or a sandblasted finish -- its bevy of color options include things like Dazzling Blue, Moonlight Silver, and Greenery.
Also joining in are the P10's fingerprint sensor (Huawei calls it Smart Touch) and expandable 128GB maximum internal memory (Some models only have 64GB or 32GB), with the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system skinned with EMUI 5.1 giving it some final touches.
Our verdict: Although a bigger battery and a flashier display would have made the P10 a stronger high-end contender, it nevertheless makes for a solid choice for mobile photographers looking for a slim and relatively-powerful smartphone.
