The Kyocera DuraScout presents several outdoors-friendly features that go beyond the usual waterproof and dust-proof ratings. These help elevate its status and appeal, which may have been compromised by the cons that we have highlighted below.
As expected, the DuraScout boasts being waterproof, dust-proof, and shockproof -- with IP68 and Military-standard 810G certifications to back up these claims. It also parades a Sapphire Shield display that's designed to resist scratches. Its Smart Sonic Receiver Technology and dedicated speaker key are meant to augment call and operational volumes in order to counteract noisy environments. Lastly, its screen is geared to be glove- and moisture-friendly .
These aforementioned features make the DuraScout look like the ideal rugged phone, but they conceal a major shortcoming underneath. Compared to many similar devices, this smartphone has a below-par 3100mAh battery . Granted, such a value goes above the average across all phones, but for a model that's meant for use in outdoor adventures and the like, this might be a case of inadequate lasting power.
As for hardware-related pros and cons, this device nestles a quad-core processor that has only a 32-bit architecture . Its 1.4GHz speed and 2GB RAM aren't the best, but they are passable.

Its cameras don't fare greatly compared to competing rugged phones, as well. The 2-megapixel front-facing shooter looks amiss beside the more common 5-megapixel selfie cams found on other phones. The 8-megapixel main camera pretty much suffers the same fate, but at least it can record 1080p videos .
The DuraScout attempts to make a strong mark in the display specs department. With a 4.5-inch 720p screen, it has a relatively-better pixel density (around 326DPI, specifically) than its rivals .
With all these pros and cons being said, the DuraScout appears adequately-competent to be able to handle tough environmental conditions -- but it comes without the benefits of having a comforting battery. As such, if extra toughness is all that you're into -- and if your're not a fan of overnight adventures -- then we feel like this device might be a great match.
