The Galaxy J2 2017 (model SM-J200G) may be an update to Samsung's J2 family, but it's far from being a revamped version. As a matter of fact, it suffers numerous downgrades over the 2016 edition, causing it to land a full level lower than its predecessor in terms of technical pros and cons.

Other than display, the J2 2017 also cut some corners in terms of processing specs, now running on a low-caliber 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos 3475 chip with only 1GB of RAM , whereas the 2016 model runs on a 1.5GHz four-core chip with 1.5GB of accompanying RAM. Moreover, its battery capacity drops from an appreciable 2600mAh to a dismal 2000mAh . Sure, its 14-hour promised video playback time sounds desirable, but the rest of its battery scores, including a 41-hour audio playback time and a 9-hour maximum browsing time (on both 3G and 4G networks) , are significantly-lower than the corresponding averages as of this review.

A couple more of the J2 2017's pitfalls come in the form of its cameras. It replaces the previous model's 8-megapixel primary camera with a modest 5-megapixel shooter , while the selfie cam, which formerly stood at 5 megapixels, now only has 2 megapixels to offer .
