Samsung Galaxy Sol 2 Review of Pros And Cons

A sequel to Samsung's 2016 Galaxy Sol, this entry-level 5-inch Nougat-run Android shows some rays of hope storage- and battery-wise, but ends up pretty dull on many other aspects.

Even though it posts no big threat to full-fledged heavy-duty smartphones, the Sol 2's 2600mAh boasts a 23-hour talk time (19 hours on 3G networks) and lasts up to 71 hours when continuously playing music -- as per Samsung's stress tests. Its 720-minute video playback time sounds reassuring as well, especially when compared to the 612-minute average as of this write-up.

From a low-caliber standpoint, the Samsung Galaxy Sol 2's storage memory is also a huge pro, doubling up its predecessor's 8GB native capacity to 16GB , while offering support for a maximum of 256GB's worth of top-up memory , the latter being a pretty big deal, since we almost only saw it on high-end devices around its release date.

The aforementioned specs aside, the Sol 2 sadly does not have a flawless list of pros and cons, seeing that it sticks to a mild 5-inch HD (1280 x 720) display that scrapped the original Sol's Super AMOLED technology for a much-cheaper TFT architecture . Moreover, despite running on an upgraded -- if only slightly -- 1.4GHz quad-core processor (The first model uses a 1.3GHz four-core chip), this sequel phone still goes back for a paltry 1.5GB-only RAM .

Very much like the first Sol, this follow-up drops the ball in terms of imaging, touting an old-fashioned 5-megapixel rear-facing camera that at least captures FHD-1080p videos alongside a 1.2-megapixel front-facing secondary cam . Heck, even its base model managed a 2-megapixel selfie shooter! Some users may be glad to see Samsung's Easy Mode , HD voice , and 4G LTE connectivity in one phone, though, especially given its budget-friendly profile.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy Sol 2's pros and cons make it nothing more than an introductory Android phone, but its promising battery scores and relatively generous memory could lock in the deal for its novice clientele.
