Sony Xperia ZL Review of Pros And Cons

Picture of the Sony Xperia ZL, by Sony

Like its close relative Xperia Z, the Xperia ZL packs some impressive specifications, most notable of which are the 5-inch full HD touchscreen and the quad-core processor. The photography department also shows a lot of promise with its 13-megapixel camera and 1080p HD video recorder. By far, this smartphone seems capable on almost all aspects. The only thing that annoys us is its above-average weight of 5.33 ounces (151 grams)!

On-paper Review rating:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Ostensibly no HDMI connector:

We're delighted that the Sony Xperia ZL can record fancy 1920 x 1080 clips, but we're surprised we didn't find any sign of the Xperia ZL sporting an HDMI port (which comes in handy to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV without having to move them first to your computer).

Below-average selfie cam:

In 2026, we would expect more than just 2-megapixel of selfie cam resolution.

Unknown weight:

It's frustrating that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

Huge display:

The screen is big, making it a phablet: 5.0 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels means about 10.68 square inches and an image sharpness of at least 440.37 dots per inch (DPI)!

Interesting onboard memory:

The Sony Xperia ZL features a hefty user memory (16000MB), but it may sometimes be better to buy a phone with an included memory card instead, since the memory card can then be reused in a future cell phone.

High-megapixel camera:

Above-average image resolution - of 13-megapixel - with these features: 16x digital zoom, Auto focus, Continue Burst Mode, Face detection, Flash/Pulsed LED, Flash/Photo light, Front-facing came, Geo-tagging, HDR, Image stabilizer, Picture Effect, Red-eye reduction, Scene recognition, Self-timer, Send to web, Smile Shutter, Sony Exmor RS, Image sensor, Superior Auto, Sweep Panorama, Touch capture, Touch focus, White balance.

Good battery life:

Sony says that the Sony Xperia ZL provides 600 minutes of talk time. If it proves true in the real life, it may be a great advantage.
