Xgody Y18 Pros & Cons Review

Although its significantly-large screen space could appeal to a certain group of phablet buyers, the Xgody Y18 drops the ball on so many other departments, causing its overall specs to look appalling when put under the 2017 microscope.

First off is its deal-breaking network compatibility, which is nailed to 3G bands , despite that fact the 4G support has become a standard smartphone facet as of its release. Moreover, its large 6-inch IPS display , which we mentioned earlier, is the opposite of crisp, given its prehistoric 960 x 540 (qHD) pixel resolution . In comparison, a lot of other entry-level 6-inchers have HD-720p or FHD-1080p definitions. Its low-tech display could translate to a low power-consumption rate, however, so its 2800mAh battery capacity ends up as a pro in our book. Note, though, that it far from makes our list of big battery phones, especially with utterly-sub-par battery scores: 80-hour standby time and 10-hour talk time .

For its imaging, the Y18 banks on a so-so pairing of an 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapxel selfie cam . In fact, its cameras are so unremarkable, that Xygody provides minimal imaging details in its list of pros and cons. At the very least, it tries to make up for its middling cameras with a CNC aluminum alloy frame finished with a micro-arc concept and a matte coating .

Diving under the hood, we found more disappointments. The Y18 boldly operates on a basic 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MTK6580 processor , which is not what we had in mind for a phone of its size, and, of course, not a very amusing con in the wake of eight-core processors. Accompanying its underwhelming engine (unsurprisingly) is an also-mediocre 1GB-only RAM . Despite those setbacks though, the Y18 manages to throw a decent 16GB on-board memory into its entry-level mix of pros and cons, which we think is a nice touch, considering that a lot of Androids powered by similar hardware only have 8GB to offer in that attribute. That said, our excitement dropped instantly at the site of its up-to-32GB-only external memory support .

All-in-all, the 210g-heavy Xgody Y18 sits near the very bottom of the phablet spectrum, but it could serve as a nice introductory phone for Android newbies who prefer large displays.
