ZTE Reef Pros & Cons Review

Picture of the ZTE Reef, by ZTE

The ZTE Reef obviously bears its name well because of its IPX7 rating for water and shock resistance and we are happy to see that basic prepaid smartphone manufacturers are adding more phones to the already existing slew of rugged smartphones. However, the specs are nothing to call home about: a 5 megapixel camera, a 4-inch touchscreen, etc. But what is being offered here is obviously a durable solution to a low-cost approach to owning a smartphone.

On-paper Review score:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Unknown touch-screen technology:

We were unable to find out whether it sports a resistive or capacitive touch screen.

Obviously no HDMI connector:

It's all well and good that the ZTE Reef can record high-resolution 1280 x 720 videos, but we were disappointed not to find any evidence of the Reef featuring an HDMI port (which is convenient to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV.)

Is there a memory expansion slot?:

We didn't see a memory expansion slot.

Unknown weight:

It's frustrating that we could not find its weight information.

Now, the Pros:

Rugged:

It is described as a rugged phone (more sturdy, better water-resistance, etc).

Good battery life:

Its talk time of 540 minutes is among the highest. Though battery-life ratings could be exaggerated by manufacturers, this is an interesting indication that the ZTE Reef might last longer than other phones.

In the box:

The package comes with the following accessories: USB Data Cable Charger, Recycling Envelope.

** This phone is also known as: Virgin Reef
