Compare The Huawei nova vs nova plus

Both making their debut on Huawei's booth during the IFA 2016 trade show in Berlin, the Huawei nova and nova plus are two flagship-level Android smartphones equipped with the brand's Emotion UI v4.1, sophisticated cameras, and powerful hardware components.

Our intensive specs comparison reveal certain differences between these high-ranking contenders, which, by the way, are the first two models in the nova series -- most other notable Androids from Huawei are products of the Honor and Mate families.

So, how does the Huawei nova compare to its nova plus sibling? We pit them versus each other here.

Camera Details

One of the major differences between the Huawei nova vs the nova plus resides on the imaging department. The plain nova model sports a 12-megapixel rear camera, while the nova plus has much-higher chances of making it to our list of the best camera smartphones as of August 2016 in comparison, with a 16-megapixel camera perched on its back end. The nova plus also has two LED flash lights, while the nova has a single-LED flash.
If you can look past those disparities, however, you may find it delightful that both models record 4K (3840 x 2160) videos at best and offer phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) as well as optical image stabilization or optical anti-shake (OIS). Additionally, both of them have 8-megapixel secondary cameras, which sound just right, for 2016-released high-end smartphones.

Turning our eyes on their facades, the nova touts a 5-inch display, whereas the nova plus meets users with 5.5 inches of screen real estate. However, the smaller nova model does not necessarily lose this bout, considering that it has a higher pixel density of 443ppi, versus the nova plus's 401pppi. This, clubbed with its narrower display, potentially translates to a crisper interface for the nova -- consequently making a huge difference for the smaller phone.
Regrettably, Huawei only armed the models being compared with Full HD (1920 x 1080) definitions, while some of the best Huawei smartphones boast Quad HD (2560 x 1440) screens, conceivably being a deal-breaker for those of you looking for a fully-premium Android device.

Performance

There may be no difference under the hood between the nova plus vs the nova, but performance is nevertheless a point of interest, as far as this specs comparison is concerned.
Both models, along with a few IFA 2016 releases from other major brands, are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 CPU, which is a 14nm chip composed of two quad-core clusters running at 2GHz, with 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM tagging along. This means that, not only do the nova and nova plus pass flagship yardsticks, they also lineup with some of the fastest Android phones as of this analysis.

Battery Life

Next on our list of differences between the Huawei nova vs nova plus is battery power. The 5-inch nova comes with a 3020mAh capacity, which may sound passable for a 2016 high-ender, but is less-desirable (for obvious reasons) compared to the nova plus's 3340mAh power cap.
Frankly, though, we were expecting something around the 4000mAh neighborhood, just like what the 6.6-inch Huawei Note 8 lugs. Granted, it has a much-larger display than the nova models, but considering their hardware composition, which we will get to in a bit, at least 4000mAh of stamina seems like it would have been the way to go for Huawei.

Huawei nova vs nova plus: Our Recommendation

To bring this scrutinized specs comparison a close, we took into account the fact that both devices are of flagship caliber and that, on many accounts -- performance being one of those -- both devices still hum at about the same rate. Consequently, here's what we think you should do:

  • If you want the model with the potentially-better camera and a higher power cap, the nova plus, with its 16-megapixel camcorder and 3340mAh battery, is the best choice.
  • However, if you prefer a smaller device that does not greatly compromise its flagship stature (despite the differences in specs), the 5-inch, nova sounds like the one for you.
