The 2018 BlackBerry Evolve X is an Android-run BB smartphone that offers a few signature BlackBerry perks alongside some middle-class (as of this specs-based review) pros and cons. One of its weak points is that it comes with only 64GB of on-board memory , whereas some of its BlackBerry siblings start out with 128GB of storage. Similarly, we cannot help but wish that its 6-inch 18:9 display reached for a flagship-class 2K-1440p definition, instead of settling for a 1080p-only FHD+ sharpness -- a couple of older BB phones, such as the PRIV and the DTEK60, boast 2K screens.

While it has its fair share of drawbacks, however, the Evolve X satisfies us with its highly-evolved 12- plus 13-megapixel dual-lens main camera , which is decked out with a 4K-2160p video-recording mode, a dual-tone LED flash, and phase-detection autofocus -- check out some of the best photography phones here. Additionally, its 16-megapixel selfie cam , which is accompanied by its own frontal LED flash, hits just the right mark for a 2018-released middle-class contender.

Its array of BlackBerry-branded features include the DTEK security-warning app that constantly monitors the phone's security level and recommends particular tweaks to improve it. Also on board is the BB Hub app that streams notifications from the user's social media and email accounts on a single interface. Adding to its security features are BB Password Keeper and BB Privacy Shade.

Although this BlackBerry model sounds somewhat modest compared to the fastest phones listed here on Phonerated, its Snapdragon 660 2.2GHz + 1.8GHz octa-core processor and 6GB LPDDR4X RAM are appreciable upgrades over the plain Evolve's 1.8GHz eight-core chip and 4GB-only RAM. Joining the mix is an Adreno 512 GPU running at 650MHz.

The Evolve X's pros also include a 4000mAh battery that's enabled for both wired (QC3.0) and wireless charging (requires a wireless charging pad). It comes with BB Boost Charge, promising to reduce its battery charging time by restricting background applications when plugged in, while the Dolby Atmos audio system is at the helm of its music features.

So, considering its pros and cons, the BB Evolve X sounds like a solid choice for middle-class smartphone shoppers eying a phone that places emphasis on phone security and photography.
