Obviously named after the famed hulking gorilla, Cubot's King Kong is a 14.85mm-thick smartphone that could find itself alongside the best rugged and waterproof smartphones around, given its IP68 certification for dust- and waterproofing . Having said that, this Cubot model is pinned to the middle-class smartphone category by most of its other technical pros and cons, which include a low-caliber 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6580 processor and no more than 2GB of RAM . In comparison, several of its rugged Android rivals run on octa-core processors, consequently adding to the eight-core smartphone population, and pack at least 3GB of RAM. Moreover, it awkwardly lacks 4G-LTE network connectivity , which was already considered a must-have facet when it debuted.

Going back to being King Kong, though, this 2018 Cubot smartphone beats its chest proudly with a 4400mAh non-removable battery that brings to mind Phonerated's list of the best big-battery phones out there today. Also, the fact that it opts for a so-so 5-inch HD (1280 x 720) 294ppi display , which at least comes with a 10-point multi-touch, makes its robust battery sound more reassuring. Despite not sound that competitive, however, its display comes with a damage-resistant LONGJI glass finish , which complements its rugged housing.

The rest of the Cubot King Kong's pros and cons include a respectable (relative to its hardware components) 13-megapixel LED-flash-rigged 4P-lens main camera . It also offers an 8-megapixel secondary camera up front, which, although is not a head-turning pro, just about passed the mid-end yardstick as of this technical review.

The King Kong is loaded with a 16GB memory that sounds like a slight con, knowing that some of its closest rugged rivals, such as the Kyocera DuraForce Pro, come with at least 32GB of native storage. Joining its specs are outdoor essentials like GPS navigation (Cubot claims that it has an advanced GPS module) and a pre-installed Compass App. It has two micro SIM card slots and a microSD card tray that enables up to 64GB's worth of top-up memory.

Topped off by the Android 7.0 Nougat OS and a no-nonsense Black exterior, the Cubot King Kong is a gritty, high-stamina smartphone for those seeking a mobile companion for the great outdoors.
