DOOGEE S40 Review of Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

Hailed by DOOGEE as the rock-solid explorer, the 2019 S40 is a rugged smartphone whose biggest pros include a toughened housing that passes the IP68 certification for dust- and waterproofing as well as the IP69K certification that makes it resistant to high water pressure. It also boasts a MIL-SPEC-810G rugged rating, which essentially means that it can survive accidental drops onto hard surfaces from up to 1.2 meters.

Despite its gritty exterior, however, the DOOGEE S40's processing specs nail it to the low-caliber Android category. Its cons include an old-fashioned 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6739 processor coupled with a 2GB-only RAM -- octa-core models were no longer that rare in the rugged smartphone category as of this technical Phonerated review.

Adding to its drawbacks is a 16GB memory and an up-to-32GB-only external memory allowance , the latter sounding paltry, compared to the top-up storage capacities offered by many competing rugged models.

Counteracting the aforementioned weak points is the 238g-heavy S40's robust 4650mAh battery , which calls up our list of the best high-endurance phones available, especially since it promises a whopping 105-hour browsing time -- one of the highest marks when we were checking out its pros and cons. It also scores an above-average 33-hour talk time and a 21-day standby time.

Joining the mix is a 4K-video-capable 8- plus 5-megapixel double rear camera, a so-so 5-megapixel selfie cam, and NFC support. It offers a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as well as a facial recognition system.

The S40 features a 5.5-inch 18:9 display with a humdrum definition of only 960 x 480 pixels and a measly 195ppi pixel density score , though it does come with a damage-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 4 finish .

With dual SIM card slots and a finish of either Fire Orange or Mineral Black rounding out its pros and cons, the S40 winds up as a solid choice for those eying a low-specked, but outdoor-ready rugged smartphone.

On-paper Review rating:

First, the Cons:

Obviously no HDMI connector:

It is nice that the DOOGEE S40 can record high-resolution 3840 x 2160 videos, but we were disappointed not to find any evidence of the S40 featuring an HDMI port (which is convenient to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV.)

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

Rugged:

The DOOGEE S40 is trumpeted as a rugged phone (more sturdy, better water-resistance, etc).

NFC-equipped:

NFC is becoming increasingly important for electronic payments and other applications.

Quad microprocessor:

Not only does it have a 1.5GHz processor clock speed, it also features 4 CPU cores.

The memory can be expanded up to 32GB:

The S40 is not sold with a memory card but it can accept up to 32GB in memory expansion, which is convenient to store pictures and video clips taken with the built-in 8-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam) camera.

High-resolution (8-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam)) camera:

It includes a high-resolution built-in camera (8-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam)) with the following options: Bokeh, Mono, Beauty, Night, Professional.

Spectacular talk time:

If DOOGEE's claim is accurate, the S40 and its (4650mAh) battery will provide 1980 minutes of conversation, a lot of talk time!

Decent-resolution selfie cam:

The selfie cam resolution seems just about average.
