DOOGEE Y8 Review & Pros And Cons

One of DOOGEE's earliest 2019 releases, the Y8 is a budget-class smartphone whose array of pros and cons seems to focus on the display and stamina fronts, while dropping the ball when it comes to performance. Its biggest drawback comes in the form of a modest 1.5GHz quad-core processor that obviously flounders in comparison to the eight-core chips used by the leading octa-core-powered smartphones listed here on Phonerated -- eight-core engines were no longer that uncommon in the budget Android market as of this specs-driven review. At the very least, it is accompanied by a 3GB RAM and an IMG GE8100 graphics engine.

Its cons also include a 16GB storage memory , knowing that a few similarly-specked 2019 models start out with 32GB of on-board storage -- its aforementioned storage cap can be expanded by up to 128GB, though. That being said, its 3400mAh battery winds up as a slight pro in our book, at least when taking into account its somewhat undemanding processor.

The Y8's strongest selling point, however, is its wider-than-usual 6.1-inch LTPS display, whose 19:9 aspect ratio was probably lifted from the playbooks of some full-fledged upscale large-screen Androids. It comes with an appreciable screen-to-body ratio of 89.9 percent as well as a waterdrop notch, upon which sits a run-of-the-mill 5-megapixel front facing camera . Sadly, it suffers from a paltry 1280 x 600 HD+ screen resolution , whereas a good number of other 6-inchers offer FHD/FHD+ (1080p) definitions.

Joining in on its pros and cons is a respectable dual-lens rear-facing camera composed of an 8-megapixel main lens and a 5-megapixel secondary lens, with standard autofocus and an LED flash tagging along. This DOOGEE model also combines a facial authentication system with a fingerprint scanner for security and it is offered in gradient color options like Phantom Purple and Emerald Green.

In essence, the DOOGEE Y8 is a budget-class Android phone for those who do not fancy high-class hardware, but nevertheless want a wide display and a passable battery pack.

On-paper Star rating:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Is there an HDMI port?:

The DOOGEE Y8 can record high-resolution (1280 x 720 pixels) movies. Bravo! But we couldn't determine whether it had an HDMI port or not. Granted, HDMI (which lets you connect to your HDTV), is not an absolute necessity, but it seems like a desirable feature on an HD phone.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

Quad processor:

Not only does it have a 1.5GHz processor clock speed, but it also has 4 cores.

Huge display:

We are talking about an above-average screen, making it a phablet: 6.1 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 600 pixels means about 14.3 square inches and an image sharpness of at least 270 dots per inch (DPI)!

The memory can be expanded up to 128GB:

The Y8 is not sold with a memory card but it can accept up to 128GB in memory expansion, which is convenient to store pictures and video clips taken with the built-in 8-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam) camera.

Interesting camera:

Above-average camera resolution - of 8-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam)

Average front cam:

The selfie cam resolution seems just about average.
