DOOGEE Y8 Plus Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

This Plus version of the DOOGEE Y8 comes with a higher power capacity and improved cameras, yet its pros and cons still rely on a quad-core processor (2GHz) that obviously flounders versus the engines powering the best eight-core smartphones featured here on Phonerated. Also, it offers no more than 3GB of RAM , whereas a few similarly-sized models with tantamount battery packs offer at least 4GB on that front.

Those cons aside, the Y8 Plus features a 13- plus 8-megapixel dual-lens main camera that's capable of capturing 4K or Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) videos and is infused with phase-detection autofocus (PDAF). Up front, it sports a so-so 8-megapixel f/2.2-aperture selfie camera.

Its pros also include a hefty 4000mAh inbuilt battery , which we consider a significant upgrade over the plain Y8's 3400mAh-only cell, especially since its processing specs did not take that huge of a leap forward. Also, the DOOGEE Y8 Plus comes with twice as much native memory as its base model, at 32GB, with a memory card slot for up to 128GB of external storage tagging along.

The Y8 Plus touts a 6.21-inch LTPS display whose wide 19:9 aspect ratio was quite popular among full-blown high-end phablets as of this data-driven review. That being said, its screen is far from flagship-caliber, being marred by a modest 1520 x 720 HD+ resolution and, consequently, a pixel density score of only 270ppi .

For security, it combines a facial recognition system with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, the latter of which also works with its NFC adapter for cashless payments and mobile wallet management. It is offered in Midnight Black as well as gradient colors like Phantom Purple and Midnight Blue, with the Android 9.0 Pie OS tying its pros and cons together.

All said, the Y8 Plus is a high-stamina wide-screen phone for users who do not want to go for a flagship-caliber Android just yet.

On-paper Star rating:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Apparently no HDMI connector:

It is all very well that the DOOGEE Y8 Plus can record high-resolution 3840 x 2160 videos, but we were disappointed not to find any evidence of the Y8 Plus featuring an HDMI port (which is convenient to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV.)

Unknown weight:

It's frustrating that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

NFC-equipped:

NFC can be used for electronic payments and other applications.

Quad CPU:

Not only does it have a 2GHz processor clock speed, it also features 4 CPU cores.

Very large screen:

The screen is larger than usual, making it a phablet: 6.2 (actual diagonal size is 6.21 inches) inches and a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels means about 14.84 square inches and an image quality of at least 270 dots per inch (DPI)!

The memory can be expanded up to 128GB:

The DOOGEE Y8 Plus is not sold with a memory card but it supports up to 128GB of memory expansion, which will be convenient to save videos and pictures taken with the built-in 13-megapixel (combined with an 8-megapixel sub-cam) camera.

High-definition (13-megapixel (combined with an 8-megapixel sub-cam)) camera:

It includes an advanced built-in camera (13-megapixel (combined with an 8-megapixel sub-cam))

Decent-resolution selfie cam:

The selfie cam resolution seems just about average.
