The 2017 Huawei nova 2i is a mutation of the original nova 2 that stretches the latter's 5-inch display to 5.9 inches. Despite being much larger than its base model, however, the nova 2i fails to address some of the nova 2's weaknesses, including its 64GB-only internal memory that's a lot less promising compared to the 128GB or even 256GB boasted by several other high-caliber alternatives. Its lack of NFC (Near Field Communication) support is quite a perplexing con as well, knowing that NFC was all but a standard feature among mid- and high-end smartphones as of this specs-driven review.

As for its upsides, the nova 2i shoots for a spot in our list of the best camera smartphones by effectively sporting four camera lenses. At the back, it features a 16-megapixel main cam coupled with a 2-megapixel deputy cam , while perched above its screen is 13-megapixel plus 2-megapixel dual selfie camera . Both of its dual-lens systems pretty much work the same way, with the higher-resolution lens serving as a standard RGB cam and the 2-megapixel sub-cam taking charge of bokeh or depth-of-field analysis. Our attention is more drawn towards its front camera, though (Check out some popular selfie smartphones here), since dual-lens front cam setups were quite rare in the phablet market when it came out.

Despite falling short of an ultra-high-end QHD/QHD+ (1440p) screen resolution, which some of the highest-caliber phablets boast, the nova 2i's expansive 5.9-inch FHD+ (2160 x 1080) 18:9 FullView display ends up as a pro in our book, considering that many comparable wide-screen phones settle for narrower 16:9 aspect ratios -- at least around the time of its market entry.

Powering the nova 2i's pros and cons from from under the hood is a Kirin 659 16nm octa-core dual-cluster processor running at quad 2.36GHz + quad 1.7GHz , which we would say is satisfactorily accompanied by 4GB of RAM , although the market ceiling for RAM as of this write-up stood at 8GB -- discover some premium 8GB-RAM phones here. It is equipped with a 3340mAh battery that falls short of our 4000mAh sweet spot for similarly-specked models, though some might consider it a welcome upgrade over the original nova 2's 2950mAh cell, especially since it scores an encouraging 20-hour talk time (1200 minutes) and roughly 23 days on standby .

A 128GB memory card slot, a metal unibody coated in either Aurora Blue, Graphite Black, or Prestige Gold are on board well, with the Android 7.0 Nougat OS overlaid with EMUI v5.1 topping off its pros and cons.

With all that said, Huawei's nova 2i targets high-end phablet shoppers who want a wide-screen phone with notable cameras and some upmarket hardware.
