Motorola Moto G5 Pros & Cons Review

Though crafted with style and durability in mind, this fifth-generation Moto G model from Motorola was not immune to a couple of cons, the biggest of which is its low-resolution 5-megapixel selfie camera , which at least features a pre-integrated Beautification Mode and is aided by a display flash function . Additionally, its 13-megapixel primary camera, despite hitting the upscale bulls-eye (as of this technical specs review) in terms of resolution, forgoes 4K-2160p video-recording , which was one of the trendiest smartphone pros when it entered the market back in March of 2017. Luckily, it comes with phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) and 8x digital zooming for photos (Many of its rivals only have 4x zooming capabilities), but we still doubt it joins our list of best camera smartphones any time soon.

This 5-incher dons a classy diamond-cut aluminum exterior combined with the brand's signature water-repellent nano-coating -- if you wanna go for a full-blown rugged Android, however, check out our list of rugged and waterproof smartphones here . Sitting inside its chassis is an eight-core processor , in the form of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 430 chip. It's apparently the sluggish kind of eight-core engine, however, since its clock rate peaks at a mere 1.4GHz . In comparison, most chart-toppers in our list of octa-core smartphones clock in at at least 2GHz -- a few of them even reach as high as 2.5GHz. Its processor is accompanied by a decent (by 2017 mid- to high-end standards) 3GB RAM , though a lower-class version with only 2GB is also available.

The remainder of its pros and cons include a fingerprint scanner , which was a rather typical upmarket smartphone facet when it came out, but a nice touch nonetheless. As for power, it relies on a 2800mAh full-tank battery capacity that is neither disappointing nor head-turning, at least as far as middle-class eight-core Androids are concerned.

Also joining the mix is the G5's 32GB (or 16GB, depending on which variant you go for) storage memory expandable by a maximum of 128GB . It also comes with a front-ported speaker and standard 4G-LTE (Cat 4) connectivity. Topping off its feature set is a 5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) 441ppi display , which sounds tolerable, considering its other pros and cons.

Overall, Motorola's Moto G5 does not go over-the-top specs-wise, but it does fit the bill as a splash-ready smartphone for those who want to dip their toes in the octa-core waters.
