NUU Mobile A5L+ Pros & Cons Review

- Analysis by KJ David

When it comes to pros and cons, the NUU Mobile A5L Plus is pretty much in the same entry-level market segment as the plain A5L, the only difference being that it comes with 2GB of RAM , instead of the other model's paltry 1GB capacity, and that it now supports NFC (Near Field Communication) , which is a wireless protocol widely used for cashless in-store purchases. As of this specs-based review, NFC was not that common of a facet among low-specked unlocked smartphones -- by the way, check out some of the best unlocked models here.

Apart from those pros, the A5L+ pretty much suffers from the same cons as its based model. For one, it still runs on a modest quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek processor that obviously flounders when pitted against the engines used by some popular octa-core models listed here on Phonerated.

Adding to its drawbacks is a 2-megapixel-only front-facing camera that sounds prehistoric, even by low-end smartphone standards -- many comparable models tout at least 5-megapixel selfie shooters. It offers a so-so 8-megapixel primary camera.

The A5L+ comes with a low-class 5.5-inch IPS screen whose wide 18:9 aspect ratio is marred by its pitiful 960 x 480 FWVGA+ resolution . Sitting under the hood is a 2650mAh battery that's far from impressive, considering the number of similarly-specked low-end smartphones that pack 3000mAh battery cells.

Joining its mix of pros and cons is a 16GB native memory that can be expanded by only up to 64GB , a fingerprint scanner for phone security and for authenticating its NFC-based transactions, and two SIM card slots (nano SIM + micro SIM). VoLTE (voice over LTE networks), which is a typical call audio technology, is on board as well.

In summary, the NUU A5L+ is a fitting choice for practically-minded shoppers eying an entry-level Android phone that can be used for mobile wallet applications.

On-paper Review score:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Apparently no HDMI connector:

It is all very well that the NUU Mobile A5L Plus can record fancy 1280 x 720 clips, but we're surprised we didn't find any sign of the A5L Plus sporting an HDMI port (which comes in handy to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV without having to move them first to your computer).

Ordinary front cam:

By today's standards, we demand more than just 2-megapixel of selfie cam resolution.

Unknown weight:

It's frustrating that we were not able to find information about its weight.

Now, the Pros:

NFC touch-less technology:

NFC can be used for electronic payment systems and other uses.

Quad-core CPU:

Not only does it clock at 1.3GHz, it is even quad-core.

High-definition (8-megapixel) camera:

It includes a superior-resolution camera (8-megapixel) with the following options: Beauty Mode, HDR.
