Oppo A1 Pros & Cons Review

- Analysis by KJ David

Oppo's 2018 A31 is a 5.7-inch large-screen smartphone that flexes some high-end muscles in terms of hardware, even calling up this Phonerated list of the fastest smartphones available. Before we jump inside its shell, though, note that we still caught a couple of questionable cons lurking within its middle-class array of specs. These include its lack of a fingerprint scanner , which is rather surprising, coming from an Android phone that was announced in 2018.

Imaging-wise, it touts a typical-sounding 13-megapixel CMOS camera that likely flounders in comparison to the dual-camera systems boasted by some of the best photography-first smartphones available (dual-lens cameras were highly fashionable around the time of this on-paper review). In a similar manner, its humble 8-megapixel front camera won't be turning any heads, since selfie cams with autofocus and dedicated LED flashes were quite in demand when it came out.

Going back to its hardware, the A1's pros are led by a high-octane 2.5GHz octa-core 64-bit MediaTek MT6763T processor whose raw clock rate outstrips those of most of its octa-core rivals in the mid-range market segment. It also comes with an ample 4GB RAM and a 64GB internal memory , although Oppo also ships a lower-specked variant with only 3GB of RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage. Both versions come with support for up to 128GB's worth of external memory.

As for the rest of its pros and cons, the A1 feeds off a 3180mAh battery that does not quite hit the mark, given its relatively-fast engine. Having said that, it's not totally discouraging, since its 5.7-inch TFT screen settles for a not-so-demanding (by 2018 standards) 1440 x 720 HD+ definition and a 282ppi-only pixel density , neither of which sound worthy of its wide 18:9 screen aspect ratio .

Joining the Oppo A1's selling points is its favorably-thin 7.7mm body , which, though not exactly industry-breaking, makes it thinner than a lot of competing 2018 mid-rangers -- feel free to explore some of the thinnest phones here. It also comes with dual nano SIM card slots and it runs on the ColorOS 3.2, an Oppo-branded overlay to the Android 7.1.1 Nougat ecosystem.

So, here's what the A1's assortment of pros and cons tells us: It is a large-display smartphone geared towards users who seek a middle-class phone that focuses on performance and multitasking more than anything else.
