RED Hydrogen One Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

Crafted by camera maker RED, the 2018 Hydrogen One is one of the world's first 4-view media smartphones , which means that its 5.7-inch LTPS WQHD (2560 x 1440) 515ppi interface is capable of streaming holographic content without the need for 3D glasses or any tracking hardware -- a pro that threatens the displays offered by some of the best VR-caliber smartphones out there. Also note that it offers traditional 2D display functionalities.

Despite its innovative media capabilities, however, our technical review reveals some not-so-premium specs, one of which is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 2.45GHz eight-core processor that shies of the 2.8GHz Snapdragon 845 chip used by some of the fastest Androids available as of this Phonerated write-up. Moreover, we think that its 6GB RAM , which is by no means paltry, could have been bumped up to a full 8GB (Explore some premium 8GB-RAM models here), considering its holographic screen and cameras.

Speaking of cameras, both of the RED Hydrogen One's 12.3- (rear) and 8.3-megapixel (front) cameras are capable of capturing photos and videos in the H4V format , letting users capture H4V holographic content and display it outright on the phone's aforementioned screen. This Android-running specialty smartphone's multimedia pros and cons also include the A3D spatial surround sound audio technology that promises cinema-like audio quality for streaming holographic media.

As for power, the Hydrogen One packs a sizable 4500mAh battery scoring an above-average (as of this analysis) 26-day standby time and a little over 40 hours of continuous usage, putting itself rather close to some full-blown high-endurance smartphones.

This RED phone is offered in three specs configurations -- two aluminum-shelled (Black and Shadow) variants that both offer 128GB of on-board memory and a heavy 292g limited edition variant rocking a titanium body and packing 256GB of storage. All versions come with Kevlar fiber accents and support up to 512GB's worth of memory expansion. It runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box.

To rehash, while it is far from a flawless smartphone, the Hydrogen One's array of pros and cons makes it way more high-tech versus most popular flagship models of its time, consequently making it a fitting choice for tech-savvy multimedia junkies who like being at the forefront of mobile technology.

On-paper Star rating:

Let's Look at the Cons:

Is there an HDMI port?:

The RED Hydrogen One can record high-resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) movies. Bravo! But we couldn't determine whether it had an HDMI port or not. Granted, HDMI (which lets you connect to your HDTV), is not an absolute necessity, but it seems like a desirable feature on an HD phone.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

And Now, the Pros:

Innovative features:

It was among the earliest phones to feature a nanotechnology-powered screen capable of displaying holographic (H4V) media content.

Faster processor:

Its processor speed of 2.45GHz combined with 8 cores is part of the fastest.

Very large display:

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 5.7 inches and a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels means about 13.87 square inches and an image quality of at least 515 dots per inch (DPI)!

Interesting camera:

Above-average camera resolution - of 12.3-megapixel

Spectacular talk time:

Interesting selfie cam:

The 8.3-megapixel selfie camera offers an interesting resolution.
