UMIDIGI's 2019 S3 Pro is a high-caliber smartphone looking to join Phonerated's list of the best smartphones for photography, although it's array of pros and cons is by no means flawless.
Starting off with its flaws, the S3 Pro weighs in at 216.6 grams , making it almost 40 percent heavier versus the average smartphone as of this technical review. Moreover, although its 128GB native memory sounds tolerable, its support for only up to 256GB of external space is a tad underwhelming, knowing that a few tantamount models from competing brands support up to 512GB on that front.
The S3 Pro's key specs include an auspicious dual-lens primary camera consisting of a high-resolution 48-megapixel main lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, with 2x optical zooming, a dual-LED flash, and phase-detection autofocus tagging along. Sadly, it does not support UHD-2160p video-recording -- 4K imaging is somewhat a typical pro among photography-driven smartphones. This UMIDIGI model flexes some high-end muscles when it comes to selfies as well, offering a 20-megapixel f/2.0-aperture front-facing camera that sits right on its screen's waterdrop notch -- check out the best selfie phones here.
Although the S3 Pro's 5150mAh battery sounds rather generous, its Helio P70 eight-core processor, which peaks at only 2.1GHz , winds up as a con in our book, especially because the fastest smartphones available when it debuted ran on at least 2.5GHz engines. That being said, its 6GB accompanying RAM safely passes the high-end yardstick, at least around the time of its 2019 Q1 market entry.
The aforementioned pros and cons are joined by a 6.3-inch In-Cell LTPS display with a phablet-class aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, the latter of which could have been bumped up to a flagship-caliber 2K-1440p sharpness . This UMIDIGI model sports a Ceramic Black exterior, which, according to the brand, gives it a luxury feel.
Running on the Android 9.0 Pie platform, the UMIDIGI S3 Pro caters to upscale Android shoppers who put photography and battery life above everything else.
On-paper Review score:
It's all well and good that the UMIDIGI S3 Pro can record high-resolution 1920 x 1080 movies, but we were disappointed not to find any evidence of the S3 Pro featuring an HDMI port (which is convenient to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV.)

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 6.3 inches and a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels means about 15.1 square inches and an image quality of at least 409 dots per inch (DPI)!
The UMIDIGI S3 Pro is not sold with a memory card but it supports up to 256GB of memory expansion, which will be convenient to save videos and pictures taken with the built-in 48-megapixel (combined with a 12-megapixel sub-cam) camera.
