UMIDIGI's Z2 is a flagship-class 2018 smartphone aiming for a seat alongside some of the best photography smartphones listed here on Phonerated by touting a quad-camera setup -- it has a 16- plus 8-megapixel dual rear camera and a second dual-lens system up front (also made up of 16- and 8-megapixel cams), the latter lining it up with some selfie-driven flagship contenders.

Despite its auspicious imaging pros, though, our keen eye for specs still caught a couple of cons as we were reviewing this UMIDIGI model. These include the absence of a 4K/UHD (3840 x 2160) video-recording capability , which was no longer that rare in the high-end category when it was released. Also, while its dual selfie cam is an appreciable perk, it could have benefited from a front-firing LED flash .

Another slight drawback that puts it on the back foot versus some other 2018 high-tier contenders is its 1080p-only screen resolution , which does not quite suit its expansive 6.2-inch 19:9 interface -- many full-blown high-end phablets tout 2K-1440p definitions.

As for its hardware pros and cons, the Z2 is powered by a middle-class Helio P23 dual-cluster eight-core processor running at 2GHz + 1.5GHz , but it does boast a robust 6GB RAM and it uses a 700MHz Mali G71 MP2 graphics engine. It is powered by a 3850mAh battery that charges up through an 18W fast-charging system.

While it comes with no more than 64GB of native memory (Some of its closest rivals start out with 128GB), the Z2 aptly supports 256GB's worth of top-up storage, with dual nano SIM card trays joining the mix as well. Like a good number of other high-enders that hit the market at around the same time, it combines a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a facial recognition system for device security. It runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo platform out of the box and is available in gradient color finishes like Phantom and Twilight.

So, with its kind of pros and cons, the UMIDIGI Z2 sounds like a fitting choice for photography enthusiasts and selfie addicts.
