- Analysis by KJ David

The 6-inch (5.99-inch, to be exact) Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is an up-sized version of the Redmi 5 that suffers from similar cons as its 5.7-inch little brother, particularly on the imaging front. For instance, it opts for an old-fashioned 5-megapixel-only selfie camera resolution , missing out on this Phonerated list of the best phones for selfies by a gaping margin. Additionally, it passes up on a dual-lens rear camera setup , which was all the rage at the time of this specs-driven review. Instead, it sticks to a 12-megapixel primary camera. That being said, its cameras are not all about drawbacks, with its selfie cam being decked out with pros like Beauty 3.0 and a soft-tone light for selfies and its rear cam being aided by a dual-LED flash .

When it comes to hardware pros and cons, the Redmi 5 Plus sounds unimpressive compared to the best octa-core smartphones available, seeing that its Snapdragon 625 1.8GHz eight-core engine shies of the 2GHz benchmark for upmarket smartphones as of its release. It does, however, come with a tolerable 4GB RAM and a 64GB native memory extendable by up to 128GB, though Xiaomi also ships a lower-specked version with only 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board memory.

Its biggest selling point comes in the form of a 4000mAh battery cell , which, according to Xiaomi's controlled stress tests, reaches a whopping 165 hours of continuous music playback or up to 9 hours of continuous gaming on a single charge. Its battery, by the way, sounds like a much-needed upgrade over the Redmi 5, since it extends its base model's 5.7-inch 720p (HD facade to a 5.99-inch one with a wide 18:9 aspect ratio and a sharper resolution of 2160 x 1080 (FHD. Its screen is decorated with pros and cons like Sunlight and Night Modes as well as automatic color temperature adjustment. Joining in are some typical semi-high-end features like a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a metal body, and a 2.5D display finish.

All said, the Redmi 5 Plus comes off as a feasible choice for those in search of a high-stamina large-screen smartphone, but are not ready to go into full-fledged flagship territory just yet.
