Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pros & Cons Review

- Analysis by KJ David

A semi-high-end smartphone that's very big on photography, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7's pros and cons are headlined by an AI-powered dual rear camera consisting of a whopping 48-megapixel primary lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor, likely finding itself alongside some of the leading imaging-first smartphones listed here on Phonerated. Among its key imaging specs are a 1.6-micron pixel size (It uses the 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology), AI scene recognition, and native bokeh photography. Note, though, that it captures FHD-1080p videos only , whereas a few tantamount models capture Ultra HD (2160p) videos.

This Redmi Note edition's cons include a couple of middling (as of this technical review) hardware components, such as a Snapdragon 660 eight-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and a 4GB maximum RAM count . In comparison, some of the best octa-core models around use chips running at roughly 2.5GHz and pack at least 6GB's worth of RAM. At the very least, the aforementioned features are accompanied by a dedicated Adreno 512 graphics processor that clocks in at 850MHz. The Note 7 also offers a reasonable 128GB native memory cap extendable by up to 256GB.

Up front, it rocks a large 6.3-inch screen that reminds us of the facades of some full-blown flagship phablets with its expansive 19.5:9 aspect ratio and Dot Drop notch design. It sits on a 2340 x 1080 Full HD+ resolution and it features native color temperature adjustment. Sitting on its screen notch is a 13-megapixel selfie camera that, just like its rear-facing cam, is also infused with AI optimizations like AI Beautify and AI scene detection.

Joining its pros is a hearty 4000mAh battery that supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4.0 technology and scores an above-average 23-hour talk time (1380 minutes). It comes with a typical circular fingerprint scanner and it dons a gradient glass finish of either Neptune Blue, Nebula Red, or Space Black.

So, with those pros and cons said, the Redmi Note 7 sounds like a solid purchase for shoppers eying a phone that puts a lot more effort into photography that most other middle-class models.

On-paper Review score:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Above-average radiation (SAR) rating:

The maximum mobile phone radiation allowed is 1.60 watts per Kilogram of body mass (w/kg). The Xiaomi Note 7 is rated at 1.19 w/kg... Of course, it's not one of the highest SAR ratings, but did you know that there are other good phones with a lower SAR rating?

Ostensibly no HDMI connector:

It's all well and good that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 can record fancy 1920 x 1080 clips, but we're surprised we didn't find any sign of the Redmi Note 7 sporting an HDMI port (which comes in handy to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV without having to move them first to your computer).

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we were not able to find information about its weight.

Pros:

Faster processor:

Its 2.2GHz processor speed combined with 8 cores is part of the fastest.

Includes Miracast:

It boasts Miracast, a a wireless protocol that allows you to connect to TVs and share your screen

Very large screen:

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 6.3 inches and a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels means about 15.1 square inches and an image quality of at least 409 dots per inch (DPI)!

Memory can be expanded up to 256GB:

The Redmi Note 7 doesn't come with an included memory card but it supports up to 256GB in memory expansion, which is convenient to store pictures and video clips shot with the included 48-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam) camera.

Top-of-the-line camera:

The Redmi Note 7 is boasts and exceptional 48-megapixel (combined with a 5-megapixel sub-cam) camera. It also sports the following options: AI portrait mode, Background blurring, Burst, HDR, Panorama, Steady handheld night photography.

Above-average selfie cam:

The 13-megapixel selfie cam offers an above-decent resolution.
