Despite ZTE calling it the Nubia Z18 mini and, subsequently, suggesting that it's a watered-down version of the Z18, this wide-screen Nubia model, whose 5.7-inch 18:9 InCell LTPS 1080p display resembles those of many high-tier phablets, is pretty competitive in its own right. Its display, by the way, comes with a 480-nit maximum brightness and an 85 percent color saturation.
Having said that, it cons, which are led by its awkward lack of a memory card slot for storage expansion and humdrum (by 2018 standards) 8-megapixel front-facing camera resolution , might disappoint some tech-savvy shoppers. Luckily for the Z18 mini, though, ZTE loads it with an ample 128GB native memory (The brand also offers a 64GB-only version). Also, its selfie cam, despite the forenamed unimpressive raw pixel resolution, is accompanied by a screen flash function for brightening selfies taken under poor lighting conditions.
As for its pros, the ZTE Nubia Z18 mini lines up with many upmarket photography smartphones by rocking a dual-lens primary camera that's made up of a high-resolution 24-megapixel f/1.7-aperture primary lens and a 5-megapixel depth-sensing lens. Its imaging specs include the NeoVision 7.0 image engine and a 0.1-second claimed focus speed, both of which, as of this data-driven review, were appreciable embellishments for a dual camera system.
The Z18 mini packs some substantial artillery in terms of hardware pros and cons as well, boasting a large 6GB RAM alongside an AI-engine-accompanied Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 eight-core 2.2GHz processor that safely passes 2018 high-end benchmarks for CPUs, even though it's not as fast as the ones used by some of the best octa-core smartphones featured here at Phonerated. With those processing components in mind, however, we think the Z18 mini could have used a bit more power than the 3450mAh in its tank , knowing that, in comparison, a few other high-end 5.7-inchers pack at least 4000mAh of raw battery power.
The Z18 mini runs on its own Nubia-branded OS that's based on Android 8.1 Oreo and is offered in five color options, Purple (ZTE calls it the Provence Edition) and Celadon Blue being a couple of them.
So, given its mishmash of pros and cons, this mini version makes a name for itself and could attract heavy multitaskers and those who are inclined to photography.
