Alcatel Pixi Unite Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by Christelle Nina

Looking every bit like the ultra-basic phone that it is, the Alcatel Pixi Unite does away with bells and whistles to cater to the exceptionally-laid-back Android user. Tracfone's plain four-incher mostly has pretty standard features and specs, but some pros and cons stand out a little more than others.

Alcatel has managed to shave off several millimeters' worth of depth to make the Pixi Unite more compact in comparison to many other phones of the same stature -- being only 0.39 inches thick . Its weight of 4.16 ounces also makes it a relatively-lighter option among low-end smartphones .

The Pixi Unite's processor speed also gives it an early edge. Powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6580M processor, it has a clock speed of 1.3GHz which is marginally better than many of the competition. It runs Android Marshmallow out of the box, and its 1GB RAM is smaller than that of most other phones running the same operating system. Nevertheless, 1GB is pretty good for such a cheap phone -- considering that there still are a lot of 512MB options around.

When it comes to imaging specs, however, the Pixi Unite really held back. Sporting a solitary 2-megapixel camera on its rear , it easily gets left behind by many its colleagues (some of whom are fitted with sensors up to 5-megapixels). Granted, most comparable models don't really offer selfie sensors that go beyond the VGA mark, and missing out on potential 0.3-megapixel selfies is nothing to cry about. However, totally eliminating the front-facing camera renders the Pixi Unite completely incapable of making and accepting video calls -- a potential deal-breaker for some prospective buyers.

Its battery isn't the best at 1500mAh, either . However, this con may easily be salvaged by the fact that the Unite doesn't have the additional front camera to allot power for.

Clearly, the Pixi Unite's pros and cons underscore its position in the low-range market -- with the ability to partake in video calls and a bit of battery power having been compromised in exchange for added handiness and clock speed.
