The Alcatel A3 XL strives to be the go-to phablet for the budget-conscious. It measures six inches across the diagonal, and with this comes a resolution of 720p . This spec is already low in itself, and combined with such a large screen, you're left with a rather disappointing 245DPI sharpness .

Hardware-wise, its 3GB RAM is a welcome feature and is promising for a low-cost Android. However, it's a wonder how this pro can be maximized when its clock speed struggles at 1.1GHz . Furthermore, its small 8GB native storage almost guarantees that an additional microSD card would be needed, most especially for memory-churning users.

The aforementioned pros and cons seem to make room for one more major attraction. At its low-end price range, the fact that the A3 XL comes with a fingerprint scanner is a definite plus. Like the Alcatel A3 , which is its smaller sibling, it boasts of being programmable to launch five different apps directly from the lock screen by assigning these apps to a specific fingerprint.

Its 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel selfie sensor are pretty standard in its league. What stands out in the A3 XL, however, is the camera flash on its front . It also flaunts Snapchat-inspired live filters via its Face Mask and Face Show selfie modes .

When it comes to design, it sports the usual aesthetic seen in Alcatel models. To put it bluntly, it's not a device fit for some serious showing-off, but it does come with the advantage of being a relatively-thinner phone at 7.9mm .

If enjoying the perks of having a fingerprint scanner (and/or a selfie flash) at a low price point is important to you, then the Alcatel A3 XL is definitely worth looking into. Of course, one has to keep in mind that offering such usually-mid-end features was obviously made possible by skimping on some specs -- which are the CPU speed and display clarity in this particular instance. This pros and cons review is a further testament that, save for very rare instances, one is always bound to get what one pays for in the end.
