SKY Platinum 5.0 Review of Pros And Cons

In spite of being the owner of low-to-mid-end specs, the dual-SIM SKY Platinum 5.0 manages to look elegant enclosed in a metallic finish (in dark grey, gold, or white). It is more on the thick side , however, at 9.3mm. For one, the graph below shows that it is bulkier compared to the LG Tribute HD , which is another 5-incher with a slightly more affordable price tag. Buyers who are conscious about appearances are then left to decide if the sophisticated-looking finish is worth the extra chunk.

Knowing this, it is slightly disappointing to find that despite a thicker profile, the Platinum misses out on a relatively-impressive battery . The thinner and cheaper Tribute again beats it in terms of battery power (2100mAh for the former versus the 5.0's 1950mAh).

Performance-wise, it stays in the average -- that is, across all phones- - territory, which may be considered a pro given its ultra-budget-friendly cost. Its 1GB RAM is more than decent for its category as many sub-70 dollar phones cough up only 512MB. The same is true for its 1.3GHz quad-core processor .

Its cameras' pros and cons are a bit harder to decide on. The fact that it sports an 8-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel selfie lens is impressive, adjacent to the fact that many smartphones that are valued up to $100 possess about the same shooting resolutions. However, more and more cheap phones (such as the BLU R1 HD, for instance) are catching up to this standard. But surely, it's good that the Platinum 5.0 has already gotten on this said trend.

Its 16GB native storage is also heartening, given that the average for all phones is only 8GB. Its memory expansion slot, though, falls more at the acceptable -- rather than impressive -- domain.

The SKY Platinum 5.0, then, comes down to being a smartphone which offers lower-mid-range features at a low-tier price point. While not a few other phones offer these same pros and cons, what may turn the tides in favor of this device is its aesthetically-pleasing finish, which makes it look more expensive than it really is.
