BlackBerry Q10 Review of Pros And Cons

Picture of the BlackBerry Q10, by BlackBerry

Compared to the BlackBerry 10 OS flagship phone Z10, which has an all-touch design, the Q10 features a physical QWERTY keyboard, making it more in-line with the manufacturer's tradition. But because it features a 3.1-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, BlackBerry did not include the usual trackpad, which could disappoint some BlackBerry purists. The 2GB RAM impressed us, but even though the dual-core CPU is acceptable, we think a quad-core one could have made this phone unique.

On-paper Review rating:

First, the Cons:

Smaller touch screen:

You better have tiny fingers, since the Q10's touch screen has a smaller display surface to press on than many other smartphones. According to our calculations, it has a 4.8 square inch-display while

Smaller screen:

Its smaller screen size (3.1-inch wide with 720 x 720 pixels) is a tad small for a smartphone. It might become frustrating to surf the web or read on a smaller display, considering that today's smartphones frequently come with 4-inch wide screens with resolutions over 800 x 480.

Below-average front cam:

These days, we would hope for more than just 2-megapixel of selfie cam resolution.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

Now, the Pros:

Small display, but fine resolution:

The 3.1-inch display is not the largest around, but it has a 328.77 DPI (dots per inch) image fineness, which should produce small but sharp images.

Interesting onboard memory:

The BlackBerry Q10 boasts lots of user memory (16000MB), but it may sometimes be better to buy a phone with an included memory card instead, since the memory card can then be reused in a future cell phone.

High-resolution (8-megapixel) camera:

It includes a high-resolution built-in camera (8-megapixel) with the following options: Auto-focus, 5x Digital Zoom, Digital zoom.

High talk time:

The talk time claimed by the manufacturer (600 minutes) is higher than the average talk time. Though battery-life ratings are not necessarily measured the same way by each manufacturer, this is an interesting indication that the BlackBerry Q10 may last more than other phones.

HDMI port:

The HDMI port will be useful to watch HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) videos recorded with the BlackBerry Q10 on an HDTV (HDMI cable might be sold separately).
