Even though we are pretty sure that its moniker is a wordplay on revival, T-Mobile's 2017 REVVL does not revive anything classic specs-wise, nor does it boast some out-of-the-box features. Instead, it throws together some popular (as of August 2017) mid-level pros and cons for a relatively wallet-friendly initial price of $125 -- several lower-specked Androids cost slightly more.
Phablets And Large Smartphones
Kicking off its pros is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner accompanied by a private mode that aims to keep your delicate data protected. At the time of writing, fingerprint readers were all the rage, but considering that many of its mid-end competitors lack such mode of security, this facet hits just the right note for us. Its selling points also include a 13-megapixel primary camera equipped with inbuilt image stabilization (EIS) .
As for its downsides, this self-branded T-Mobile device settles for an HD (1280 x 720) resolution on its 5.5-inch facade , despite loads of other similarly-sized Androids rocking Full HD (1920 x 1080) displays. Additionally, it sticks to a basic 5-megapixel selfie camera resolution , though at least a dedicated frontal LED flash is in place.
Under the hood, the T-Mobile REVVL banks on an above-average 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6738 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. Why above-average? Well, many other 5.5-inchers in this market segment settle for 1.2GHz-1.3GHz quad-core chips, so its 1.5GHz clock rate should give you a little more speed to play with. Powering its hardware is a passable 3000mAh battery bar , while on storage duties is its 32GB internal memory and 128GB maximum external memory card slot .
As for the remainder of its pros and cons, this Nougat-operated device features Night Mode , which uses warm light to protect the user's eyes when using the phone in the dark, and a metallic silver frame for a slight aesthetic boost. The aforementioned features are in now way new, but are still nice to have, especially for those shopping on a strict budget. Bluetooth v4.2 and 4G LTE network access are on board as well, putting it on par with most other 2017 smartphones in terms of connectivity.
As a quick review, the REVVL delivers a respectable mix of mid-range features for a price that won't break the bank, probably befitting those who are in search of a step-up over dull entry-level models.
