When it comes to technical specs, the 2018 Blackview BV5500 is a high-stamina, full-rubber-bodied rugged smartphone that's peppered with a bunch of low-caliber cons, including a mediocre 1.3GHz quad-core MTK6580P processor coupled with only 2GB of RAM and a 16GB native memory that can be expanded by a dismal 32GB only -- many tantamount budget rugged phones support 128GB memory cards.

Its array of pros and cons is also marred by the absence of a standard 4G-LTE network adapter and its lack of support for NFC , the latter being a widely-used cashless payment protocol around the time of this technical review.

Despite those weak points, though, the 225g-heavy BV5500 comes with a couple of redeeming pros, one of which is its hulking (by entry-level standards) 4400mAh battery , which calls up Phonerated's list of the leading big-battery models in town. Moreover, it passes both IP68 and MIL-SPEC-810G rugged certifications, making its body impervious to dust and water as well as resistant to things like temperature extremes and salt fogs.

As for its imaging pros and cons, the BV5500 is home to a basic, but still appreciable, for a low-end phone, dual-lens camera that's made up of an 8-megapixel main camera and a low-class 0.3-megapixel (VGA) subsidy cam, with a standard LED flash tagging along. When it comes to selfies, however, this Blackview model shudders in comparison to the market's best selfie phones, offering nothing but a 2-megapixel-only front-facing camera .

Up front, it features a tolerable 5.5-inch HD-720p IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a damage-resistant Gorilla Glass finish . While it does not come with a typical fingerprint reader , the BV5500 has a Face Unlock function promising a device unlocking time of only 0.1 seconds.

Tying everything together is its rubber-clad exterior and Android 8.1 Oreo OS, both topping it off as a low-caliber phone for the outdoorsy and power-hungry user.
