Cat expands its rugged Android lineup with the 2018 S48C, whose list of technical pros and cons make it sound like a solid contender for Phonerated's list of rugged and waterproof smartphones. Its biggest drawbacks include its mundane 5-megapixel fixed-focus selfie camera , although, understandably, selfies are not really a forte for phones of its kind. It also does not go beyond 32GB of native memory , whereas a couple of other Cat models pack 64GB's worth of native storage -- it does, however, come with support for up to 128GB of extra space.

A couple of its biggest pros is its IP68 and MIL-SPEC 810G rugged certifications, which means that it can survive submersion under 4 feet of water for up to 35 minutes and accidental drops onto concrete from 6 feet, among other things. This model, like some of its Cat siblings, is also classified as non-incendive Class 1 Div 2, Group A-D, T4 , which makes it a fitting choice for those who work in industrial plants or similar hazardous environments. Additionally, it is rigged with a dedicated Push-To-Talk button powered by Sprint's Direct Connect Plus technology, with VoLTE and VoWiFi tagging along.

The S48C is ably powered by a 4000mAh battery that, with stress test scores like a 30-hour talk time and a 22-day standby time under its belt, reminds us of the battery packs offered by some of the best high-endurance phones on the market.

The rest of the Cat S48C's hardware pros and cons include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 eight-core 2.2GHz processor accompanied by 4GB of RAM, which we think is a respectable choice, that is, if it wants to go up versus most other middle-class smartphones that came out in 2018. Explore some of the leading eight-core smartphones here.

This 9.1-ounce phone (The average smartphone weighed only around 5.4 ounces when we were reviewing its features) comes with a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD IPS display that supports wet-finger and glove-on touchscreen navigation and is furbished by a shatter-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 5 cover glass . Its specs also include a passable 13-megapixel rear-facing main camera as well as 4G LTE network connectivity of up to 600Mbps.

To rehash, the S48C is a high-stamina rugged Android for shoppers who want a phone that's ready for outdoor adventures or gritty field work.
