- Analysis by KJ David

As its name suggests, the Huawei Honor 20 Pro is a step-up model of the Honor 20 that's geared towards a spot alongside some of the prominent photography-focused smartphones in town. That said, its technical pros and cons did not go through our technical review unscathed.

For starters, this 2019 high-end contender touts a 6.26-inch notch-less display that does not quite hit the flagship mark when it comes to sharpness, settling for a 2340 x 1080 FHD+ definition and a 412ppi pixel density count , instead of reaching for a QHD+ (1440p) sharpness that most of the best phablets offer.

Additionally, although its 32-megapixel in-display main camera easily winds up as a pro in our book in terms of raw pixel resolution, an accompanying front-firing LED flash would have made it more promising .

Those slight cons aside, the Honor 20 Pro is still one of Huawei's highest-specked models as of this on-paper Phonerated evaluation, challenging some of the best photography smartphones of its time by rocking a premium-class quad camera consisting of a high-resolution 48-megapixel standard camera, a 16-megapixel wide-angle cam, a 2-megapixel depth cam tailored to bokeh photography, and an 8-megapixel telephoto cam that enables up-to-30x digital zooming and up-to-3x optical zooming . Its imaging specs also include a 960fps slow-motion video capture mode, 4K-2160p video-recording, and a bevy of AI optimizations.

Under the hood, the Honor 20 Pro combines a high-octane 2.6GHz + 1.92GHz + 1.8GHz eight-core Kirin 980 processor with a robust 8GB RAM , while a 4000mAh battery infused with the brand's 22.5W Honor SuperCharge technology takes charge of its power supply. Also on board is a 256GB internal memory , which we do not find that reassuring, given the number of competing high-enders that pack twice that amount.

Crowning its pros and cons are a holographic design of either Phantom Blue or Phantom Black and the Android 9.0 Pie platform skinned with the Honor sub-brand's Magic UI 2.1.0 interface.

So, even though it falters versus some of its high-class rivals display-wise, the Honor 20 Pro nevertheless calls out to tech junkies eying a phone with some highly-competitive cameras and a flagship-tier hardware setup.

On-paper Star rating:

Cons (or Not-so-great Features):

Is there an HDMI port?:

The Huawei Honor 20 Pro can record high-resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) movies. Bravo! But we couldn't determine whether it had an HDMI port or not. Granted, HDMI (which lets you connect to your HDTV), is not an absolute necessity, but it seems like a desirable feature on an HD phone.

Is there a memory expansion slot?:

According to our research, it doesn't feature any memory expansion slot.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

Innovative features:

It is one of the world's earliest multi-camera-equipped smartphones to offer up-to-30x digital zooming and 3x optical zooming.

Faster processor:

Its processor speed of Dual 2.6GHz (+ Dual 1.92GHz + Quad 1.8GHz) combined with 8 cores is part of the fastest.

NFC-enabled:

Use the Huawei Honor 20 Pro to buy things with your phone at NFC-compatible stores

Very large display:

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 6.3 (actual diagonal size is 6.26 inches) inches and a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels means about 15.1 square inches and an image quality of at least 412 dots per inch (DPI)!

Much higher-definition photos:

A 48-megapixel (combined with a 16-megapixel wide-angle cam, an 8-megapixel telephoto cam, and a 2-megapixel macro cam) camera offers a lot more pixels than most other phones. It also sports these features: AIS Super Night Mode, 3D Portrait Lighting, AI Camera, AI Ultra Clarity mode, AI Color Mode.

Interesting selfie cam:

The 32-megapixel (4.5mm in-screen cam) selfie camera offers an interesting resolution.
