Huawei nova 4 Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

The Huawei nova 4 rubbed elbows with some of the best photography-first smartphones of its time, rocking a premium-class triple-lens rear camera and an innovative (as we were reviewing its pros and cons) 25-megapixel in-display selfie cam , the latter removing the need for a display notch.

Depending on whether you get the high version or the standard one, the nova 4 boasts either a 48- plus 16- plus 2-megapixel three-lens camera or a 20- plus 16- plus 2-megapixel setup -- the 16-megapixel lens enables wide-angle shots of up to 117 degrees, while the 2-megapixel sub-cam is dedicated to depth-of-field analysis and bokeh shooting. Either way, the nova 4's high-class camera delivers 4K-2160p video-recording and AI-powered imaging pros like AI Beauty.

Sadly, this nova edition is not without some disgruntling cons, a couple of which include its lack of a memory card slot (It comes with 128GB of inbuilt memory) and the absence of NFC support . Also, its 3750mAh battery capacity is nothing worth calling home about, knowing that several tantamount models safely pass the 4000mAh mark.

Another slight drawback is the fact that its large 6.4-inch LTPS display settles for a 2310 x 1080 FHD+ resolution only, scoring a measly 398ppi pixel density count as a result -- some of the best phablets featured here on Phonerated boast 2K (1440p) definitions and reach up to 500ppi.

As for its hardware pros and cons, the nova 4's 2.36GHz + 1.8GHz dual-cluster eight-core Kirin 970 engine does not sound that ambitious, at least compared to the roughly-2.8GHz chips powering some of the fastest phones on the market around the time of its market entry. That being said, it offers a massive 8GB RAM , obviously for process-hungry games and heavy multitasking.

Its specs are encased by a 3D-glass body that's offered in colors like Honey Red and Crush Blue, with the Android 9.0 Pie OS skinned with Huawei's signature EMUI 9.0.1 rounding things out.

So, although it could have done better in terms of hardware and display sharpness, the 2018 nova 4 nevertheless caters to those eying a large-screen phone with some highly-competitive cameras.

On-paper Star rating:

First, the Cons:

Is there an HDMI port?:

The Huawei nova 4 can record high-resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) movies. Bravo! But we couldn't determine whether it had an HDMI port or not. Granted, HDMI (which lets you connect to your HDTV), is not an absolute necessity, but it seems like a desirable feature on an HD phone.

Any memory expansion slot?:

Our research didn't show that the Huawei nova 4 had any slot for memory expansion.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we could not find its weight information.

Pros:

Innovative features:

It was one of the first smartphones to feature an in-display selfie camera, in the form of a 25-megapixel f/2.0-aperture lens.

Faster processor:

Its processor speed of Quad 2.36GHz (+ Quad 1.8GHz) combined with 8 cores is part of the fastest.

Very large display:

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 6.4 inches and a resolution of 2310 x 1080 pixels means about 15.72 square inches and an image quality of at least 398 dots per inch (DPI)!

Very high-resolution photos:

A 48-megapixel (combined with 16- and 2-megapixel sub-cams -- the standard version has a 20-megapixel main cam) camera offers a lot more pixels than most other phones. It also sports these features: Dynamic Photo, Portrait, Night Scene, Continuous shooting, Professional Photo, 3D dynamic panorama, HDR, Panorama, Streamer shutter, Time-lapse photography, Slow-motion, Timer, Voice-activated photo, Smile Shot.

High-end additional cam:

The 25-megapixel (in-display front cam) selfie cam offers an above-average resolution.
