- Analysis by KJ David
Not to be confused with the much-older Lenovo Vibe K5, whose array of pros and cons had already fallen into the budget-tier category as of this review, the Lenovo K5 is a 5.7-inch smartphone whose specs line up with those of many 2018 middle-class and high-end contenders. Having said that, the K5 still has its fair share of setbacks, one of which is its lackluster 1440 x 720 (HD display resolution , which makes its wide 18:9 display aspect ratio (Wide display setups were popular among the best phablets when it entered the market) sound rather wasted. In comparison, a few of its middle-class competitors -- those with tantamount screen sizes -- offer sharper FHD or FHD+ (1080p) definitions.
The K5's 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750V/CB processor winds up as a con in our book as well, knowing that many of the best octa-core smartphones found here at Phonerated bluster with clock speeds of roughly roughly 2.5GHz. At the very least, its 3GB RAM sounds passable, though it could be a slight turn-off for heavy multimedia consumers and multitaskers, since comparable phones with 4GB RAM counts are no longer that rare . We were not very enthused with its 32GB internal memory either, but at least it is accompanied by a microSD card slot for up to 128GB's worth of top-up storage.
Heading over to its imaging features, the K5 apparently does not consider selfie-snapping a priority, settling for an 8-megapixel f/2.0 front-facing camera marred by a fixed-focus capacity . On the contrary, though, it comes with a dual rear camera , reminding us of many high-class imaging-driven smartphones on the market. Its dual-lens system is made up of a 13-megapixel primary lens for standard photography and a 5-megapixel sub-lens for depth-of-field analysis. Weirdly, however, the forenamed dual camera setup only captures HD (1280 x 720) videos at best , whereas the dual cams of many of the K5's mid-end rivals capture up to Full HD (1920 x 1080) videos.
Its other pros include back-to-back 2.5D glass layers and a 3000mAh battery that, although does not sound head-turning, sounds just about right, considering the rest of its features. The K5 also comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and it runs on ZUI 3.1 lite, which is heavily based on the Android 7.1 Nougat platform.
So, as far as technical pros and cons go, the Lenovo K5 is a mid-range smartphone with a solid dual camera, but with some flaws on the hardware front as well.
