LG K50S Review & Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

Even though it seems like an improved version of the original K50, the LG K50S is still a middle-class smartphone, at least insofar as its technical pros and cons are concerned. The biggest difference between the K50S and its 6.3-inch base model is that it comes with a larger 6.5-inch 19.5:9 display , which levels with those of some popular wide-screen smartphones listed here on Phonerated. Note, though, that it still suffers from a 1520 x 720 HD+ definition that was not quite on par with upmarket Android standards as of this specs-based review -- we expected at least a 1080p sharpness, given its raw screen real estate.

Also among the K50S's cons are a bunch of middling hardware components, including a 2GHz-only eight-core processor that poses no threat to the engines powering some of the fastest models in town, a modest (by 2019 standards) 3GB RAM, and no more than 32GB of native memory . Having said that, the latter is accompanied by a monstrous 2TB external memory ceiling .

This K-series edition is equipped with a respectable triple camera consisting of a 13-megapixel main lens, a 5-megapixel Super Wide lens that enables a viewing angle of up to 115 degrees, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor tailored to portrait photography. It comes with phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), which it shares with many photography-first smartphones. Also joining in is a 13-megapixel selfie cam, which we find acceptable, coming from a 2019-released mid-ender.

Adding to its list of pros is a MIL-STD-810G-compliant housing , giving it native resistance to high or low temperatures, extreme altitudes, and vibrations. On the entertainment front, it delivers the DTS:X 3D Surround Sound technology , while a passable 4000mAh battery takes charge of its power supply.

Summing up, taking into account its mishmash of pros and cons, the K50S seems to be a fitting choice for mid-end Android shoppers who put a premium on screen space and photography.
