A middle-class Stylus-Pen-equipped phablet that shares more pros and cons with the LG Q Stylus than with the original Q8, the LG Q8 2018's cons are led by a paltry 5-megapixel selfie cam resolution that makes its otherwise respectable 100-degree angle sound underwhelming. Additionally, it scores a mere 389ppi pixel density that sounds awfully low for a phone whose 6.2-inch 18:9 FHD+ (2160 x 1080) display resembles those of some full-blown flagship phablets.
Diving under the hood, the Q8 2018 does not quite level with the best octa-core smartphones available, running on a middling 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor -- 2GHz was the high-end CPU speed yardstick as of this specs-driven Phonerated review. Its engine is accompanied by a tolerable 4GB LPDDR3 RAM.
Aside from its forenamed stylus accessory, which obviously gives it at edge versus other large-screen smartphones when it comes to creativity, this 2018 LG model's pros also include a colossal 2TB microSD card slot accompanying its 64GB eMMC native storage. Also, it reminds us of some popular rugged and waterproof smartphones with its IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certifications -- the former makes it impervious to water and dust grains, while the latter makes it more resistant to shocks, vibrations, and temperature extremes than the average smartphone.
Going along its rugged features is an acceptable (given its assortment of pros and cons) 3300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 . On its rear surface, the Q8 2018 touts a 16-megapixel PDAF-rigged (phase-detection autofocus) primary camera with the Q Lens image-searching tool at the ready, under which sits a standard rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Also joining in are signature LG audio perks like the DTS:X stereo audio technology and a Hi-Fi Quad DAC . It comes preloaded with the LG Pay mobile wallet app and it dons either a Moroccan Blue or an Aurora Black finish.
To rehash, the LG Q8 2018 is a mid-ranger that targets creativity- and productivity-driven users with its pop-out stylus, wide display, and massive external storage allowance.
