Motorola's Moto G5S makes some slight tweaks to the original G5's mix of pros and cons, but it sadly falls short of a full-blown flagship Android title. While we're at it, be sure to check out our list of full-fledged flagships here . Leading its weak points is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 eight-core processor, which sounds rather sluggish, running at only 1.4GHz . In comparison, some models in our octa-core smartphones list are clocked in at around 2.2GHz, with several hardware-driven phones peaking at 2.5GHz. Accompanying its engine is a respectable (in this class) 3GB RAM and an Adreno 505 graphics processor running a 450MHz. Another thing we find quite underwhelming is its 5-megapixel-only selfie camera , which belongs more in the budget-tier space than the upscale Android market, and we're not sure its front-firing LED light is enough to make up for this shortcoming.

As for its pros, the G5S's 3000mAh TurboPower-equipped battery, which promises to restore 5 hours of usage time in just 15 minutes of charging , sounds dependable-enough, given the rest of its specs. Its 16-megapixel primary camera with phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) and an 8x digital zooming (for photos) capability is a clear-cut selling point as well. That said, its lack of a 4K (2160p) video-recording function ends up as a con in our book, since 4K or UHD imaging is a standard feature among the top camera smartphones on the market .

The Motorola Moto G5S sports a 5.2-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display furbished with Corning's 3rd-generation damage-resistant Gorilla Glass technology , while the rest of its pros and cons are housed inside a diamond-cut aluminum fuselage covered with Motorola's signature water-repellent nano-coating . Also on board is a fingerprint scanner embedded into its home button, which can be used in conjunction with its NFC (Near Field Communication) support to authenticate transactions made through Android Pay, among others. For storage, it comes with a so-so (by high-end measures) 32GB internal memory that can be expanded by a maximum of 128GB. This G5 offshoot runs Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and is available in Gold and Lunar Gray.

So, here's what our technical review of the Moto G5S reveals: It cuts corners in terms of hardware and does not promise much when it comes to selfies, but some high-end shoppers could find some merit in its relatively high-resolution rear camera and reinforced physique.
