Samsung Galaxy J2 Pure Review of Pros And Cons

- Analysis by KJ David

A prepaid smartphone tailored to non-techies and aging users, the Samsung Galaxy J2 Pure packs a purely-entry-level assortment of pros and cons. Leading its low-caliber assortment specs are a modest 1.4GHz quad-core processor and no more than 2GB of accompanying RAM . In comparison, a few other models within its price group (Its retail priced was pegged at $120 at the time of this Phonerated review) run on basic octa-core engines and come with at least 3GB of RAM under the hood.

The J2 Pure's display is also a slight letdown, coming in the form of a 5-inch qHD (960 x 540) PLS-TFT interface that at least comes with a Dragontrail cover glass , which gives it native resistance to bumps and scratches -- Dragontrail Glass is a close rival of the Corning Gorilla Glass technology, which some of its contemporaries offer.

Joining its cons are an old-fashioned 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a mundane 8-megapixel primary cam capable of capturing FHD-1080p videos. Its cameras are accompanied by a 16GB native storage memory that can be expanded by up to 512GB , which is an outright pro, at least within the entry-level smartphone category as of its 2019 Q1 market debut.

Stamina-wise, although the J2 Pure's 2600mAh battery capacity is nothing to call home about, some of its self-attributed scores passed the corresponding average values when we were checking out its pros and cons. For instance, its 16-hour video playback time was a little over 14 percent higher than the average mark as of this write-up, while its 16-hour continuous talk time (960 minutes) sounds reassuring as well. Also on board are the Samsung Customer Care app and Easy Mode (simplified user interface with larger icons), both of which are dedicated to making things simpler for senior users -- by the way, don't forget to check out other senior-friendly phones listed here.

So, with those features in mind, the Galaxy J2 Pure obviously calls out to pragmatists and first-time smartphone users who appreciate simplicity and convenience more than anything else.

On-paper Review rating:

First, the Cons:

Is there an HDMI port?:

The Galaxy J2 Pure can record high-resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) video clips. Bravo! But we couldn't confirm whether it had an HDMI port or not. HDMI, which lets you connect to an HDTV, is not essential, but would be great on an HD phone.

Unknown weight:

It's disappointing that we were not able to find information about its weight.

Pros:

Quad-core processor:

Not only does it clock at 1.4GHz, it's also quad-core.

Memory can be expanded up to 400GB:

The Samsung Galaxy J2 Pure doesn't come with an included memory card but it supports up to 400GB of memory expansion, which will be convenient to save videos and pictures shot with the included 8-megapixel camera.

8-megapixel camera:

Superior photo resolution - 8-megapixel

Other notable features:

It has the following special features: Gear Manager (Galaxy Watch, Gear Circle Manager Support, Gear Fit, Gear Fit2, Gear Fit2 Pro, Gear Sport, Gear1, Gear2, Gear2 Neo, Gear S2, Gear S3, Gear IconX, Gear IconX 2018)

Average-resolution additional cam:

The selfie camera resolution seems just about average.
