BLU G5 Review of Pros And Cons

Picture of the BLU G5, by BLU

- Analysis by KJ David

A pretty straightforward budget-class smartphone, the BLU G5 packs no more than 2GB of RAM and operates on an eight-core 1.6GHz processor that shies of the ones powering the best octa-core smartphones available around the time of this technical Phonerated review.

It offers only 32GB of internal memory and its memory card slot allows only up to 64GB of top-up storage . In comparison, many of its rivals in the budget Android market segment start out with twice as much on-board memory, at 64GB, and support at least 128GB's worth of extra space.

Screen-wise, the G5 will not be joining our list of the best phablets and wide-screen phones any time soon, rocking a somewhat modest 5.5-inch 720p-only display that at least comes with an 18:9 aspect ratio , which is obviously wider than older 16:9 solution. Its pros and cons also include an 8-megapixel front-facing camera that comes with its own dedicated LED flash -- something that's not very common among models within its price group.

Although its aforementioned processing components end up as cons in our book, the opposite is true for the G5's battery, which is a 3000mAh lithium-ion cell -- 3000mAh batteries were considered solid pros around the time of its August 2019 market entry. We also find its 13-megapixel FHD-video-enabled main camera appreciable, at least relative to its overall specs profile. Keep in mind, though, that several other smartphones within this category offer 16-megapixel or basic double-lens systems.

Joining the mix are dual SIM card trays, 4G LTE network connectivity, and the Android 9.0 Pie operating system. Its color options include Metallic Blue, Red, and Twilight finishes as well as a Glossy Black option.

With those pros and cons in mind, BLU's 2019 G5 seems like a decent purchase for those in search of a low-budget Android that puts a bit more effort into the selfie and stamina departments than several others with tantamount feature sets.

On-paper Review rating:

Let's Look at the Cons:

Is there an HDMI port?:

The BLU G5 can record high-resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) movies. Bravo! But we couldn't determine whether it had an HDMI port or not. Granted, HDMI (which lets you connect to your HDTV), is not an absolute necessity, but it seems like a desirable feature on an HD phone.

Unknown weight:

It's frustrating that we were not able to find information about its weight.

Pros:

Very large display:

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels means about 12.1 square inches and an image quality of at least 293 dots per inch (DPI)!

Memory can be expanded up to 64GB:

The BLU G5 doesn't come with an included memory card but it has a slot for up to 64GB of memory expansion, which will be convenient to save videos and pictures shot with the included 13-megapixel camera.

High-definition (13-megapixel) camera:

It includes a high-megapixel camera (13-megapixel)

Average front cam:

The selfie cam resolution seems just about average.

In-box accessories:

The BLU G5 includes the following accessories: Screen protector, Silicone case, Sticker. It might be useful.
