Kyocera DuraXV LTE Pros & Cons Review

Sticking to Kyocera's go-to rugged formula, this LTE-enabled version of the DuraXV knocks us out right of the bat with a heavy con: a weight of 6.17 ounces , which is significantly more than that of recent Dura flip phones, which are mostly in the 5.7-ounce area. Part of the explanation may lie in its IP68 as well as MIL-STD-810G rugged certifications. The former makes it impervious to dust and water, while the latter gives it native resistance to things like vibration, extreme temperatures, solar radiation, and accidental drops. Moreover, it is certified Non-incendive, Class 1, Division 2, Group A-D, T4 , which basically means that it is safe for use in hazardous work environments, such as workplaces with flammable gasses or mists. For all its toughness, however, the DuraXV LTE's specs only rely on a 1530mAh battery , which sounds unimpressive when compared to those of several other outdoor-ready flip phones. Consequently, it promises an underwhelming 8-hour talk time .

Apart from battery life, the Kyocera DuraXV LTE's cons also include its primitive 2.6-inch QVGA (320 x 240) TFT display , although screen technology has never been a priority for most devices in the rugged basic phone category, and it does beat even the previous DuraXV Pro and its 2.4-in display. Conversely, its 1.08-inch monochrome high-contrast transflective external display is a slight plus, seeing that a good number of comparable clamshell phones forgo external screens entirely.

Among its other pros and cons that we reviewed are a programmable key , which is mainly for its Push-To-Talk (PTT feature, and a favorable (by flip phone standards) 16GB storage memory that can be expanded by a maximum of 64GB -- also an upgrade over the previous DuraXV models, which only allowed up to 32GB. Its processing components, including a 1.1GHz MSM8909 quad-core processor and a 2GB RAM are appreciable as well, especially knowing that it is just a flip phone, yet even some Android smartphones suffer from 1GB-only RAMs.

Joining the mix is a passable 5-megapixel LED-flash-equipped camera . For users who work where cameras are prohibited, though, a non-camera version is also available. A dual-microphone setup with noise cancellation, global-ready roaming, and a 2-year manufacturer's warranty finish off its assortment of pros and cons.

In the end, the DuraXV LTE is obviously not the best in terms of display and stamina, but its ultra-rugged features and generous memory still make it a viable outdoorsy flip phone.
