- Analysis by KJ David
Essentially a mix of mid-range and upmarket pros and cons, the Xiaomi Redmi 7's specs include a not-so-competitive octa-core 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor that shudders in comparison to the engines powering the fastest smartphones listed here on Phonerated, most of which do not run any slower than 2.3GHz. Its hardware flaws also include a humdrum 3GB RAM , which could have been bumped up to 4GB or even 6GB, considering what several of its semi-high-end rivals offer.
Also among its cons are the 1520 x 720 HD+ definition and the 269ppi pixel density score of its otherwise appreciable 6.3-inch 19:9 Dot Drop display. While you're here, don't forget to pop open our list of the best large-screen smartphones available.
On the flip side, leading the Redmi 7's pros is a 12- plus 2-megapixel dual rear camera that utilizes a bunch of AI optimizations , such as AI scene recognition (27 distinct scenes) and an AI-aided portrait mode. Similarly, its 8-megapixel f/2.0-aperture front-facing camera delivers AI perks, such as Xiaomi's self-branded AI Beautify 4.0. It also comes with a screen flash function to help improve the lighting conditions when snapping selfies in dark environments.

Also among this Redmi edition's selling points is a 4000mAh non-removable battery promising a 2-day lifespan on a single charge -- a lot of other mid-range models released around the time of this review miss the 4000mAh threshold for raw battery power. Also, it offers a 64GB memory (The brand also ships 32GB and 16GB variants) that can be expanded by a maximum of 512GB , while a reflective back cover and a gradient finish gives it some flair on the design front.
Its other pros and cons include a fingerprint scanner sitting right under its rear camera setup, an AI face unlock feature, and dual VoLTE support. It comes with dual SIM card slots and it runs on Android 9.0 Pie from the get-go.
To rehash, the Redmi 7 makes for a viable choice for those who want to dip their toes in AI imaging without having to spend to much on a full-fledged flagship-class smartphone.
On-paper Star rating:
If cell phone radiation is a concern, we would like you to know that the Xiaomi Redmi 7 has a somewhat higher-than-average SAR rating (1.07 w/kg). It ain't necessarily too high (there are many higher-SAR phones) but, at the same time, it's not really one of the lowest figures.

We're delighted that the Xiaomi Redmi 7 can record fancy 1920 x 1080 videos, but we're surprised we didn't find any sign of the Redmi 7 sporting an HDMI port (which comes in handy to watch HD videos on your shiny HDTV without having to move them first to your computer).

It's frustrating that we were not able to find information about its weight.
The speed of its Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 (14nm, with FinFET technology) microprocessor (1.8GHz) with 8 cores is among the fastest in the current market.

We're dealing with a hefty display here, making it a phablet: 6.3 (actual diagonal size is 6.26 inches) inches and a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels means about 15.36 square inches and an image quality of at least 269 dots per inch (DPI)!
The Xiaomi Redmi 7 doesn't come with an included memory card but it has a slot for up to 512GB of memory expansion, which will be convenient to save videos and pictures shot with the included 12-megapixel (combined with a 2-megapixel sub-cam) camera.
It features a high-megapixel camera (12-megapixel (combined with a 2-megapixel sub-cam)) with the following options: AI portrait mode, HDR.
The selfie cam resolution seems just about average.
